Past meetings

2009

IIRA World Congress in Sydney, 24-27 August 2009 (http://www.iceaustralia.com/IIRA2009/) - The gender and IR study group at the International Industrial Relations Association conference in Sydney Australia was titled: ‘“Its OK to have your mind in two places at once”: Gender in organisations and the challenges for theory and practice’. The meeting drew on an excerpt from popular culture – an episode of an Australian police drama series - to identify and unpack several ubiquitous, gendered issues relevant to Australian and international workplaces. A panel of four industry practitioners and academics - Alison Sheridan from the University of New England, Somali Cerise from the Australian Human Rights Commission, Sara Charlesworth from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Kerriann Dear from the Queensland Working Women’s Service - framed the discussion from their respective areas of expertise. Approximately 25 conference delegates from a range of countries attended the meeting and actively participated in discussions. Major themes included those related to gender and police work and ‘doing gender’ in other masculinised work environments, workplace sexual harassment, workplace cultures which foster (or not) women’s participation and inclusion, and issues of power and leadership.
